We’re recruiting! Twelve new Independent (non-Executive) Members to sit on the Children’s Commissioner’s Adult Advisory Panel
The Children’ Commissioner for Wales Rocio Cifuentes MBE is the statutory, independent office holder who protects and promotes children’s rights in Wales. The Children’s Commissioner listens to and speaks up for children and young people in Wales so that children’s rights are protected, and supports, challenges and influences public services in Wales to make a positive impact on children’s lives.
As the Commissioner embarks on her new three-year strategy ‘Making Children’s Rights Real’, we’d love to find members for our Adult Advisory Panel who can help us to deliver this strategy and who are as passionate as us about achieving positive outcomes in the lives of children and young people in Wales.
We’re seeking twelve new independent members to sit on our Adult Advisory Panel to scrutinise, challenge and provide independent advice to the Children’s Commissioner on how the Commissioner’s remit and powers can be used to best effect to improve outcomes for children and young people in Wales.
Reporting directly to the Commissioner, members are required to assist the Commissioner and team with:
- the strategic direction for the organisation;
- scrutiny of the implementation of three-year strategic plans and annual work plans;
- monitoring and reviewing operational performance and delivery for effectiveness.
We want to broaden our understanding of the experiences of children and young people, build a workplace where difference is valued, and understand the perspectives of people from a diverse range of characteristics. We warmly welcome applications from people with a broad range of experiences and protected characteristics.
Members will bring specific expertise and knowledge and will be required to have:
- ability to influence and engage with organisations at a senior level to promote positive change;
- knowledge of the role, remit, powers and duties of the Commissioner;
- knowledge of and experience in organisational governance;
- knowledge of the cultural and bilingual landscape in Wales and an understanding of how you can contribute to the committee effectively in this context.
In addition to the above criteria members will also have a proven track record in at least ONE of the following areas:
- working influentially across either the public, private or voluntary sectors;
- knowledge of services relevant to children, young people and families;
- knowledge and experience of the policy making process at local and national levels;
- a thorough knowledge of (or commitment to gaining knowledge of) the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and children’s rights approach;
- experience of working with local and national media outlets;
- an understanding of Wales, the Welsh language and Welsh culture; or
- the ability to communicate in Welsh.
- professional expertise and/or lived experience of poverty or a protected characteristic.
The appointment is for a term of three years and members will be invited to start in post in late September 2026. The time commitment for this role is 5 days per year, with 4 meetings per year which are a mix of hybrid and in-person meetings, at which attendance is expected.
