Supporting the Transition to Not‑for‑Profit Care in Wales

As the recent consultation on removing profit from children’s social care nears its close, it is important to reiterate how important and welcome it is that this policy has been introduced and is being implemented with a clear timeline. Children and young people have been clear that profit should not be made from their care, and the removing of profit from their care is an example of policy driven by children and young people’s voice.

However, for this policy to be successfully implemented, Welsh Government must support stakeholders as much as possible. This means ensuring that there is more communication with care providers about removing profit from children’s social care; enough investment to support private sector providers to transition to not-for-profit provision; and that local authorities are supported to ensure that there is enough not-for-profit care provision in their areas.

Finally, the transition to not-for-profit provision must not lead to disruption of the care and support provided to children and young who are receiving care. Clear communication about the change to care provision in Wales must be made with children and young who are care experienced, as well as the support that is available to them during the transition period.
