Commissioner’s response to UK Government’s Child Poverty Strategy

Commenting on the strategy, Rocio Cifuentes MBE said:

‘This is an important strategy for children in Wales, on the most significant and wide-ranging issue affecting their lives. I have long called for the removal of the 2-child limit and warmly welcome the UK Government’s intention to end this cruel policy. But it’s vital that we don’t see this change as a silver bullet – child poverty is the biggest issue affecting children in Wales and eradicating it will require long-term determination, ambition, and action on both ends of the M4. For Welsh Government, this should mean putting child poverty at the very top of their agenda, and keeping it there. I have called for specific measures like Universal Free School meals for secondary school children, free transport for under 21s, and a new Welsh Child Payment, and I will continue to do so. I have also called on the Welsh Government to commit to long-term targets on child poverty reduction, which they have failed to do. Targets provide clear accountability, which is so important on an issue of such significance. Many children in Wales are living in dire financial situations that will require multiple policy interventions and a laser-sharp focus for years to come.’
