Children’s Rights for Professionals

What are children’s rights?

Children and young people have 42 rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

These 42 rights outline the things children and young people need to grow up happily, healthily and safely.

A Children’s Rights Approach

Many organisations across Wales are adopting A Children’s Rights Approach for working with children, grounded in the UNCRC, to help them integrate children’s rights into their decision-making, policy and practice.

A children’s rights approach can help organisations to:

  • prioritise children’s rights in their work with children and families to improve children’s lives
  • give children the opportunities to make the most of their talents and potential
  • make sure children have the information and resources to enable them to take full advantage of their rights
  • give children meaningful opportunities to influence decisions about their lives
  • be more accountable to children for decisions, and for outcomes that affect children’s lives
