Commenting on the documentary ‘Sins of the Church’, Rocio Cifuentes MBE said:
‘The situation at the Church in Wales poses the same questions that I’ve repeatedly raised with the Welsh Government, and questions that were asked by the IICSA inquiry. We already know that there is a stark lack of independent oversight of safeguarding arrangements in religious institutions in Wales, and a need for much stronger external accountability in this area. All options should now be under active consideration by Government, including legislative change.
‘I’m also calling for the review currently underway of the National Independent Safeguarding Board’s remit to directly address some of these questions. This review should provide clarity on how IICSA’s call for a robust Child Protection Authority can be met.
‘This BBC reporting should be another reminder to the Welsh Government that they need to act on these calls without further delay.”
