I welcome the First Minister’s call to end the two-child benefit cap – a vital step toward creating a fairer future for children in Wales.
Every child has the right to a decent standard of living, to be treated with dignity, and to thrive, as set out by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The Welsh Government recently published their child poverty strategy, and I have been vocal in my calls for the accompanying monitoring framework to include robust targets and measurable outcomes.
Around 30% of children in Wales live in poverty. Removing the cap would help lift thousands of Welsh children out of poverty, ease financial pressures on families, and promote equity and dignity for every child.
The call from the First Minister has demonstrated the commitment of the Welsh Government to children’s rights, and I would urge decision makers to work together to deliver this change in what is a crucial lever in eradicating child poverty.
